IEP Team Roles

IEP meetings can include different team members depending on the purpose of the meeting.  Each IEP team member contributes important information that informs the team to make decisions and update information in the IEP.  Here is a description of each role.

Student

The student provides a first-hand perspective about his or her needs and areas in which support is needed.  Any student of transition age, should attend their IEP to provide input into their Individual Transition Plan (ITP).

Parent(s) or guardian(s)

The parent shares information on what is taking place at home and in the community.  The parent as a learning coach also provides information regarding student academic progress as well as student strengths and areas of need. 

General education teacher

The Homeschool Teacher (HST) provides information regarding the student’s general education curriculum as well as progress on Star 360, academic skills, participation in other school programs, and student general education work samples.

Special education teacher

The Special Education Teacher/Case Manager provides input on student progress in Specialized Academic Instruction (if applicable) and suggests ideas for instructional strategies, supports, services, accommodations and/or modifications.

Administrative Designee

The Administrative Designee provides knowledge about available school resources and program options. This person may also serve as the notetaker and should be qualified to supervise special education. In addition, this person can help answer questions about the procedural safeguards or the IEP itself.

Person qualified to interpret instructional implications of evaluation results (e.g., School Psychologists, etc.)

If an evaluation was conducted, the assessor will attend the IEP to explain the results of the evaluation and how this information relates to the student’s instructional goals/objectives, supports, and accommodations.

Related Service Providers (i.e. Speech and Language Pathologist, Occupational Therapist, Assistive Technology Specialist, etc.)

Provides present-level data on student performance in the special education service (i.e. Speech and Language Service, Occupational Therapy Service, etc.) and recommends goals, services, and accommodations.
