About CVHS

Cottonwood Virtual High School is carefully crafted to meet home school students’ academic, social, and developmental needs by offering flexible schedules and interaction with peers and subject-specific teachers.

CVHS teachers provide high-level instruction, support, and accountability through virtual classes, extended learning time (ELT), and teacher office hours.

CVHS offers:

– A-G and college prep courses
– CTE courses designed for homeschool students.
– Dedicated Cottonwood teachers who deliver quality online instruction
– Extended learning opportunities, accountability, and student support

Community building is encouraged through live virtual classes, field trips, and events.

There are two class options to choose from:
Live! classes are designed by CVHS teachers for maximum student engagement success.

Self-Paced classes offer flexibility with full teacher oversight.

The goal of CVHS is for our high school students to develop their own sense of agency, build a growth mindset, and take ownership of learning, preparing them for success beyond high school.

*Students taking 2 or more classes in CVHS receive a school-issued Chromebook to use for the year. Students who drop below 2 classes return the Chromebook to the school for other students to use.

Log into your parent portal, select your student, and follow these easy steps:

Math Teacher

Scott Matthews is in his 3rd year teaching math at Cottonwood and his 24th year in education. He enjoys teaching problem solving and math proficiency. His wife also teaches, and his three children are all homeschool students.

Victoria Franck has been teaching science for 10 years. Teaching for Cottonwood has been a wonderful experience. Ms. Franck says, “As the science teacher for CVHS, I have the privilege of teaching the wonders of the natural world to all students in the program. I look forward to another great year!”

Anwyn Tompkins

English Teacher

Anwyn Tompkins is in her 7th year of teaching. She has taught all grades K-12 and beyond in 3 of the 4 core subjects. In her free time, she likes to cook, craft, read, and enjoy the outdoors with family and friends. This will be her 3rd year with TCS as an English teacher!

Kyle Lutkemuller attended CSUS where I received a BA in Philosophy with a concentration in Law, Politics, and Ethics and a minor in Government. I have taught at Roseville High School, Union Mine High School, Silver Springs High School, & CVHS. Outside teaching, my biggest passions remain the outdoors; I enjoy snowboarding, fly fishing, soccer, mountain biking, backpacking, rock climbing, and rafting – I’m pretty much a ‘yes’ man when it comes to doing things outdoors.

Kimberly Boyd has been teaching art in an academic setting and with the general public for 25+ years. One of her deepest joys is equipping students to discover the creative process and learn about personalized artistic expression. She values a “learn the process and experience the possibilities” approach over “only one way equals success.”

Ana Santana

Ana Santana

Spanish Teacher

Ana Santana is our Cottonwood Spanish teacher and specialist! She works with students of all ages to inspire them to learn a second language. Ana attended San Diego State University and received a Bachelor of Arts in Speech Pathology with three Minors in Psychology, Chicano Studies, and Spanish. Ana loves being a part of this wonderful Cottonwood community!

Kimra Balliet

Kimra Balliet

CTE/Personal Finance Teacher

Kimra Balliet is the CTE and Career Readiness Coordinator for The Cottonwood School. She has been a homeschooling parent to her four children for about 30 years. She became a credentialed teacher later in life after working in leadership positions in several different industries which is how she earned her CTE credentials. She is excited to use all the various skills she’s learned over her life and share them with others through project-based learning!

Lizette Sweiven: As an educator for 25+ years, I have been a homeschool parent, a homeschool teacher, and a classroom and virtual instructor. My hope is that all students develop a love for learning and are inspired in their post-high school goals for college and career. I am passionate about education and I am excited for this upcoming school year!
